Data Sources

Global open datasets were used to determine the subnational populations across the African continent (UN World Population Prospects, rev 2019), the proportion of the population in urban versus rural settlements (UN World Urbanization Prospects, rev 2018), the average household size (Population Reference Bureau), and formal and informal employment statistics for each country (International Labour Organization).

National datasets were used to understand the typical building construction materials used within each country and to cross-reference the global open datasets. Where possible, information on the typical construction materials were recorded separately for urban and rural settlements and the subnational level. Where national statistics were unavailable or out-of-date, an additional literature review was taken to identify common construction materials (e.g., UN-HABITAT reports). If no country-specific information could be found, assumptions were inferred based on the neighboring countries in the respect African Union region.
